ASIA, IRAQ. In a striking escalation of military tensions in the region, Iraq has initiated one of the most impactful drone strike operations aimed at Israel to date. This event marks a notable activation of what many analysts call the “third front” against Tel Aviv, adding a new layer to the current geopolitical landscape.
On Sunday evening, the group known as the "Islamic Resistance in Iraq" executed a drone strike targeting an Israeli installation situated in the Jordan Valley. The attack prompted immediate responses, with air raid sirens sounding throughout various regions, including the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, Beit She'an, and surrounding areas. Notably, this incident represents the first siren alert for Beit She'an since the onset of the ongoing Gaza crisis, underscoring the heightened alertness in Israeli territories.
In a statement released by the organisation, they proclaimed, "As part of our ongoing fight against the occupation, in solidarity with the Palestinian people, and response to the atrocities committed by the Zionist entity against civilians, our fighters employed the Al-Arfad drone to strike a target in the Jordan Valley, which is part of the occupied territories, on Sunday, September 22, 2024.” The "Islamic Resistance in Iraq" further affirmed their commitment to continuing strikes against what they consider enemy positions, indicating that this latest attack was merely a part of a broader strategy that they have termed "escalation." This drone operation was reportedly the sixth of its kind conducted on that particular day, illustrating a sustained effort in their military campaign. In response to the incident, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that sirens were activated in the Beit She'an Valley and the southern Golan Heights areas, leading to investigations into the event's circumstances. There were reports that sirens also sounded in places like Metsar and Hamat Gader and other communities located south of Lake Tiberias, highlighting the extensive geographical impact of the strikes. According to the Israeli news outlet Yedioth Ahronoth, the incident may have involved a Syrian drone infiltrating Israeli airspace, raising further questions about the origin of the strike. Israeli military analysts are currently examining the possibility of whether the drone was launched from Iraq, further complicating the already tense situation. Simultaneously, Palestinian media outlets disseminated recordings that captured the alarm sounds in Israeli settlements and military posts near Tubas and the northern Jordan Valley, coinciding with the launches from Iraqi drone capabilities. The "Islamic Resistance in Iraq" claimed responsibility for strikes targeting what they refer to as a "strategic location in our occupied territories using drones," a comment that emphasises their tactical focus on Israeli assets in the region. The Israeli military did manage to intercept "two aerial targets en route from Iraq," confirming that, while no casualties were reported, the drones did not penetrate Israeli territory. This successful interception highlights the active measures taken by Israeli defence forces against the increasing threat posed by drone operations from Iraq and potentially other neighbouring regions. Within the context of this situation, groups such as Kata'ib Hezbollah, Harakat al-Nujaba, and Kata'ib Sayyid al-Shuhada—each of which is associated with the "Islamic Resistance in Iraq" and has been sanctioned by the United States—are integral to understanding the complex web of affiliations and allegiances that characterise the current hostilities. Israeli authorities have acknowledged a series of eastward airstrikes conducted since April, although they have refrained from explicitly blaming these actions on any particular group. The overarching narrative is that Israeli defence forces have successfully mitigated threats by intercepting drones before they could breach Israeli airspace. However, the emergence of this recent drone strike from Iraq marks a significant development that is likely to lead to increased military scrutiny and response from Israel in the days to come.
