Live estimate of Public Sector Net Debt (PSND ex)

This page displays a running estimate of UK public sector net debt, anchored to the latest official figure published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and updated between releases using a clearly stated calculation method.
The number shown here is not "magic live data".
Government debt does not rise smoothly second by second. This counter exists to show scale and direction, not false precision.
What does this counter measure? This tracker follows:
Public Sector Net Debt excluding public sector banks (PSND ex)
This is the headline measure most commonly referred to as "the national debt" in UK public finance reporting.
In plain English, PSND ex is:
  • A stock measure of what the public sector owes
  • Net of certain liquid assets
  • Excluding the balance sheets of public sector banks
It answers the question:
"How much debt is the public sector carrying at this point in time?"
What this is notTo avoid confusion, this counter does not measure:
  • The deficit (which is borrowing over a period of time)
  • Debt interest spending (a yearly cost within public expenditure)
  • All future public sector liabilities (such as pensions or guarantees)
Those are different concepts, reported separately.
This page deliberately focuses on one consistent headline measure, so readers can track it clearly over time.
How the "live" estimate is calculatedThis display uses a simple, transparent method:
Anchor
The counter starts from the most recent ONS month-end PSND ex figure, as published in the latest Public Sector Finances release.
Estimate between releases
Between official ONS publications, the figure increases using a fixed £-per-second tick rate.
That rate is shown directly on the widget.
Monthly reset
When ONS publishes the next month's figures:
  • The anchor is updated
  • The estimate continues from the new baseline
This is an illustrative ticker — valid for understanding the scale and direction of travel —, and it is clearly labelled as such.
Why show this at all?Because trillions are hard to picture.
A running display forces the scale of the UK's debt stock into view, while supporting context figures help readers compare it over time and relative to the size of the economy.
Policy agreement is not required to agree on visibility.
This page exists to make the number observable, trackable, and comparable.
Key context shown alongside the counterTo help interpretation, the widget also displays:
  • Debt as a percentage of GDP
  • The most common international comparison measure
  • Debt per person / per household
  • Simple scale context, not a tax bill
  • Debt interest indicator (where available)
  • To show servicing pressure, not future projections
  • Last ONS release date and next scheduled update
These figures exist for context, not persuasion.
SourcesAll figures are derived from official Office for National Statistics (ONS) publications, including:
  • Public Sector Finances monthly bulletin and time series
  • ONS population estimates (for per-person calculations)
  • ONS families and households statistics (for per-household figures)
Direct source links are provided on the widget so users can verify the data themselves.
Transparency noteThis counter is an estimate between official releases, not a substitute for ONS publications.
Its purpose is clarity, not false precision.
