In the eastern region of Russia, A South Korean national has been detained under suspicion of espionage. Baek Won-soon was apprehended in Vladivostok and moved to Moscow for additional questioning. Baek's situation is considered highly confidential and is currently being held at Lefortovo Prison. According to authorities, Baek has been accused of passing on state secrets to foreign intelligence services. However, the public has not disclosed specific information regarding these allegations. In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in South Korea has assisted Baek during his detention. However, due to the ongoing investigation, they have not released any further details.
Baek's history includes his role as a missionary dedicated to aiding North Korean defectors and providing humanitarian support. Unfortunately, he was swiftly detained when he arrived in Vladivostok from China. In 2022, Russia officially designated South Korea an 'unfriendly' nation in international relations. This was due to South Korea's stance in favour of Western sanctions against Russia, which were imposed in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In September, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, solidifying the relationship between the two countries. However, there have been allegations that North Korea has been supplying weapons to Russia in return for access to advanced military technology. Evan Gershkovich, a US journalist, has been detained and is currently being held at Lefortovo prison for alleged espionage. His detention has been prolonged, and the court hearings are being conducted in secrecy. Alsu Kurmasheva, a journalist holding dual Russian and US citizenship, has been detained for her failure to register as a foreign agent and for allegedly disseminating misleading information about the Russian military. Her detention has recently been extended. The espionage act in Russia can result in a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. Despite facing charges, both Gershkovich and Kurmasheva maintain their innocence.
