HAITI - In the early hours of Tuesday, Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry declared his intention to step down following the formation of a transitional presidential council. This move comes amidst a deteriorating situation in the country, with rampant violence from gangs causing some to label it as a mini-civil war. Henry revealed that discussions had taken place in Jamaica with Caribbean leaders and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in attendance, with the urgent goal of resolving Haiti's escalating crisis. They have put forth a joint plan to establish a transitional council. “The government I’m running cannot remain insensitive to this situation. No sacrifice is too big for our country,” Henry said in a videotaped statement. “The government I’m running will remove itself immediately after the council's installation.”
Haiti has been plunged into chaos as violent gangs wreak havoc throughout the country. Armed with powerful weapons, these gangs have set fire to police stations, launched assaults on the main airport, and carried out daring prison raids. These brazen attacks have resulted in the escape of more than 4,000 inmates, triggering a wave of violence and instability across the nation. The ongoing violence has caused a severe humanitarian crisis. Numerous individuals have lost their lives, while over 15,000 have been forced to leave their homes and become homeless. Essential resources such as food and water are becoming scarce as vendors catering to impoverished Haitians run out of stock. Furthermore, the primary port in Port-au-Prince is closed, resulting in crucial supplies being stuck. The proposed transitional council, suggested by Caricom, would consist of seven members with voting rights and two without voting rights. These members would represent various political parties and the private sector. The council's primary goal is to guide Haiti towards resolving its current crisis. The influence of gangs in Port-au-Prince, where they hold control over 80% of the area, is causing concern among experts. The new leadership will face the daunting task of addressing these heavily armed groups and persuading them to relinquish their weapons, as it will significantly impact the future of the country. The Haitian people will receive further financial assistance and the deployment of a multinational force, as announced by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. These measures are intended to hasten a political transition and establish a presidential college to address the needs of Haiti. The road ahead is filled with challenges as leaders strive to find a resolution. However, influential gang leaders such as Jimmy Chérizier caution that if the international community fails to include Haitians in determining the country's destiny, it could result in more chaos. The situation in Haiti remains tense as the country continues to struggle with persistent violence and instability. Despite the obstacles that lie ahead, Haiti is embarking on a new era following Prime Minister Ariel Henry's resignation and the formation of a transitional council to steer the nation through its tumultuous circumstances. #northamerica #haiti #politics
